A Stranger Came Knocking: The Keddie Murders.

A Stranger Came Knocking: The Keddie Murders.

Spring in the Sierra Nevada should smell like pine and mountain rain-not blood. But on April 11, 1981, in the tiny resort town of Keddie California, a horror movie unfolded in real life. Cabin 28 was supposed to be a safe haven for Sue Sharp and her five children, a fresh start tucked among whispering trees and rugged hills. Instead, the night ended in screams, silence, and a crime scene so savage that even seasoned investigators recoiled.

Three bodies bound, beaten, and stabbed-sprawled across the living room. A hammer, a knife, and something darker than rage left their marks on Sue Sharp, her 15-year-old son John, and his friend, Dana Wingate. Sue’s youngest daughter, Tina was gone-snatched into the night, her fate unknown for years. Her oldest daughter was spending the night with a friend in a cabin next door, In the next room, Sue’s two youngest boys and a neighbor’s child slept undisturbed, just a few feet from the massacre. They never heard a sound, or so they said. How could they have slept through the slayings? And why were they spared?

Forty-four years later, the Keddie Murders still rot in the heart of true crime lore. Theories coil like smoke: a botched drug deal? A jealous lover? A police cover-up? Every answer splinters into more questions, and cabin 28 stands as a ghost-its walls torn down, but its secrets are carved deep into the California soil, and somewhere out there, the truth waits, silent as the pines.

A Marriage In Pieces

She was born Glenna Sue Davis, but folks called her Sue, a simple name for a life that would end in anything but simple, on March 29,1945 in Springfield, Massachusetts. Her parents were John Vernon Davis and Madeline Perreault Davis. Not much is known about the kind of family they were.

On February 27,1965, Sue traded in Davis for Sharp when she married James Milford Sharp, a navy man fresh from the war, in Santa Clara California. Soon the couple started building a family, John Steven came first in November ’65, then Shelia in ’66, Tina Louise in 68′, followed by Rick in 69′ or 70′ and little Greg in 74′.

The Navy kept them moving. A different town, a different mailbox. Soon the marriage began to crack and rumors state there may have been some abuse, however, in April 1979 , Sue had enough and packed up the kids and split, leaving North Carolina, for Missouri, where she stayed with her mother-in-law, Edna Sharp for a couple of weeks, before making her way to Quincy California, where Sue’s brother , Don, would help Sue get back on her feet. Once in Quincy, Sue rented a trailer at the Clairmont Trailer Park, space 27A,

Clairmont Trailer Park in area where Space 27A once sat.

Sometime in May 79′, however the family wouldn’t stay there long as the trailer was cramped for the family of six and there was one other reason Sue wanted to move her family, a man living in the same trailer park became obsessed with Tina, a police report was filed and soon after Sue moved her family from Quincy to Keddie. (out of respect for Tina , Sue’s youngest daughter, and the other child mentioned as Girl X, in the police report I found, I won’t post details, but I think you can figure out what happened. )

Next stop: Keddie. Once a lively resort, now a backwoods whisper of its former self—cabins leaning into the pines, neighbors who never locked their doors. It looked safe. Quiet. The kind of place where a mother could catch her breath and start over.
But after one night in April, the residents of that quiet sleepy little resort town would be locking their doors from then on. For Sue Sharp and two of her children it would be their last move.

Back in 1852, it started as a lumber camp—six miles from Quincy, nothing but timber and sweat. By 1903, the camp was swelling into a boomtown, thanks to a man named Arthur Walter Keddie—the father of the Western Pacific Railroad. He carved steel veins through Plumas County, laying the Feather River Canyon Route, and the little camp took his name: Keddie.
The town thrived for a while. But when the timber business dried up, so did Keddie. By the ’70s, it was more ghost than town—shacks sagging in the pines, dreams gone cold. Then someone tried to breathe life back into it. A resort. Fishing, hiking, and cabins for weekend wanderers. For a few years, it worked. Until it didn’t. Business slid, tourists stopped coming, and the owner had a choice: board it up or turn the cabins into low-income housing. He chose the latter. Keddie survived—but only as a skeleton of what it used to be.

Cabin 28: Home Sweet Home

This is where Sue brought her kids—Cabin 28. Two rooms, a basement, and walls that would one day hold secrets. Ricky and Greg bunked in one bedroom. Sue shared the other with Tina and Shelia. John, the oldest, claimed the basement. You could reach it two ways: circle around back and slip through the outside door, or cut through the kitchen and head down the rear stairs.

Life in Keddie found its rhythm. Neighbors called Sue friendly but shy—a woman who kept to herself, raising her kids and keeping the wheels turning. The Sharp children made fast friends with the Seabolt kids in Cabin 27 and Justin Smartt from Cabin 26, where he lived with his stepfather, Marty, and his mother, Marilyn.
Money was tight. Sue worked part-time at the Elks Lodge in Quincy, to help the $250 Navy allotment from her ex-husband, James—who never sent child support, stretch as well as welfare to fill the gaps. At night, she headed to Feather River Community College for a typing class. Her instructors called her a hard worker, top of the class. For Sue Sharp, it was about more than grades. It was about survival—and maybe a little hope for something better.

April 11, 1981: Murder in Cabin 28:

4-12-81, Approximately 0830 hrs, I was contacted by Dispatcher Osborne by phone at my residence. Dispatcher advised there has been a triple homicide at cabin #25 in Keddie and to respond.

0930 hr I arrived at Keddie and there met AS/Shanks (?) Sgt J. Shaver and Deputy Klement at cabin #28 AS/Shanks and I were briefed by Sgt Shaver and Deputy Klement. Deputy Klement was inside residence on our arrival and came out to meet us. He advised us that there were three bodies in the living room and that they had been killed. Also that one 12 yr old daughter, Tina was missing.

After briefing, AS/Shanks and I photographed the outside of the residence as we entered it (refer photo A, B, C, D)

Cabin 28, Note Shelia’s dropped things on porch,

We opened front door and saw two bodies on living room floor and a hump under a yellow blanket in front of couch (Refer to Photo E ) We also saw a bent steak knife near the first body (Later identified as V#1/John Sharp) The two uncovered bodies were bloody around their heads and necks. The first body was face up with hands bound as well as his feet. The binding on the feet led to the second body who was face down. The binding , an electrical cord was also tied around the feet of the second body. The second body (Later identified as V#2 Wingate) was laying on his right arm with his left arm to his side. His head was partially on a cushion on the floor (Ref photo F thru I)

70. Code Section: 187 PC

71. Crime: Murder

72. Classification: Hammer and Knife.

73. Victims Name-Last, First, Middle- Sharp, John/Wingate D/Sharp G.

When we reached the other side of the living room, we discovered victim #3 (Later identified as Victim G. Sharp) Her hands were bound with electrical wire which led to her feet, in front, which were also bound by the same wire, she also had blood about her head and neck (ref photo J) All three bodies were cold and stiff and it was obvious that they were dead. Note: Deputy Klement was also with us during this preliminary search.

Deputy Klement stated he had cleared the rest of the inside of the house for any other victims or persons with negative results. We then conducted a second search of all rooms, also with negative results. Sgt Shaver was conducting a neighborhood interview at that time. At the conclusion of our search for other person, we began our investigation at the crime scene, starting at the front door we photographed and collected evidence through the living room toward the kitchen area. AS/ Shanks and Deputy Klement photographed The evidence as I collected and recorded it. During search for evidence in living room, several items were seized (refer to evidence and photographic record) as each piece was observed. It was given a identification number along with the case number, date, officers collection and photographing initials, and photographic letter, above identification information was placed on a 3×5 card and (cont p 5)

placed next to the evidence. The evidence was then photographed with the identification card in the picture. I then collected and packaged the evidence piece and recorded the evidence on enclosed evidence and photographic report. A second 3×5 card was then placed in the location where the piece of evidence was laying. This card just had the evidence number on it. After several items had been collected, an overall photograph was taken of each area showing the location (in relation to each other, and the scene) of which the pieces of evidence were found besides the first knife mentioned, we also saw a butcher knife and a claw hammer in the living room there were also used as weapons. These two items were side by side on a small wooden table near the entry into the kitchen on the north wall. They were also blood covered

On collection of our preliminary investigation in the living room, Anderson Mortuary responded at our request and along with Detective Forcino, took possession of the three victim. All evidence or other items on the victims were left on them and were not disturbed by any of the persons at the scene (refer supplemental report by Forcino for further details of evidence and descriptions of victims after they left the scene)

After the victims were removed, we continued a search of the residence for further evidence. The search continued both inside and outside the residence for the following six days, several items were located and collected, security guards were posted at the residence during any times investigators were not present, the back door was also secured with lock and nails.

After completion of evidence collection at cabin #28 , it was sealed with coroner seals on the rear, front doors, and front window. During the investigation the DOJ was called to assist and DOJ Spiro Vasos assisted in checking for fingerprints (fingerprints expert) in cabin, also, Bruce Palmer, DOJ evidence expert assisted at the crime scene. All possible surface attached to the residence were dusted for prints as well as ninhydrinogen used on the wall paper portion of the walls with negative results other printable items seized inside the house have been turned over to DOJ prints experts for printing (ref chain of custody report) other items were processed at the S/O by DOJ and released back to Sgt Stoy, several other items including identification or blood analysis turned over to DOJ criminalist Palmer for processing (ref chain of custody report)

SUE SHARP AUTOPSY

CASE: ADP 81-06

NAME: GLENNA SUE SHARP

DATE: 4/13/81

TIME: 1:30 PM

AGE: 36 YEARS OLD

RACE: WHITE

SEX: FEMALE

HEIGHT: 62”

WEIGHT: 100 LBS

GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND EXTERNAL

This is the body of a short white female appearing to be of approximately the stated age. Rigor is complete and reduces easily. The body is cold to the touch. Lividity is present dorsally in small amount, and it no longer blanches.

The scalp is covered by medium long wavy, dark brown hair. The pupils are round and equal. The irides are brown. The sclerae are white expect for some brownish discoloration in the areas exposed to the air through open lids. The mouth contains a small amount of bloody fluid. Defects involve the upper teeth near their bases. These show roughened edges and are up to 1/4 inch in greatest dimension. All of the front upper teeth are loosened. This includes the central and lateral incisors and the right cuspid. The nose shows no fracture. The ears each show blood in the canals which is dried but in most areas it is still moist. The neck shows trauma to be described.

The chest is flat. The breasts are atrophic. The abdomen is essentially flat. The pubic hair is dark brown in color. The vulva and vagina show no evidence of injury. The vagina is virtually dry, there being only a small amount (less than 1cc) of yellowish-white mucoid material attacked to the cervical os. The anus shows no dilatation and no evidence of injury. There is brownish fecal material in the anal canal. The left thigh shows over its anteromedial aspect, an oblique rectangular shaped bruise mark, with oblique lines in its center. Overall this mark is 3 1/2 x 3/4 inches in length.

The knees are free of injury. The ankles both show depressed marks in the area of the previously described. Ligature and some whitish tape marking is present on the inner aspects of the right ankle. As previously described, the soles of the feet show considerable dried and smeared blood and some dried blood is present over the flexor surface of the toes. The antecubital areas show no needle marks or scars and the posterior aspects of the body are unremarkable.

WRIST AND ANKLE LIGATURES:

The wrists and ankles are encircled with 2 different electric cords. The two cords are black in color, and both are made up of double segments. The larger cord shows a brown female plug-in type attachment act one end. The other end is male type plug which is black in color. The wrists are criss-crossed over the individual’s abdomen. The solar surface of the left wrist touches the underlying right wrist, lateral surface. White adhesive tape is present. over the dorsal surface of the left wrist, and the electric cords cover the adhesive tape. The tape actually partly encircles the right wrist extending over the lateral and dorsal surfaces and then back to encircle the left wrist again, leaving bare the ventral surface of the right wrist. The thin black electric cord encircles the wrist over adhesive tape and multiple ties on the thin black cord are present over the ventral surface of the right wrist and adjoining medial surface of the left wrist. The smaller black wire cord is cut on the dorm of the left wrist, and the ends of the cut zone are marked with tags labeled “dorm lateral and dorm medial”

The thin black cord is markedly tight. The tape ligature is moderately loose and at least 3 and up to 5 turns of tape are present about the wrists. The tape is marked with tags labeled “left wrist medial” and “volar right wrist” and a cut is made between these tags an the wrist tape is removed.

The heavier black cord also loops about the wrists and extends over the right hand between the thumb and forefinger and connects with a lead of the cord which extends to the ankle. This connection is accomplished with the female end of the cord caught in a suggestive double clove hitch type knot near the dormsum of the right hand. The cord continues between the upper thighs, just below the individual’s vulva down to the ankles. It is looped around the ankles along the medial aspect of the right ankle and behind the left ankle. It then extends around the right ankle in a single loop prior to extending about the left ankle in a single loop. A tie is present on the medial aspect of the left ankle. The tie is remarkably tight. The small black cord is also looped about the ankles and tied on the ventral medial aspect of the left ankle in a double or triple apparent overhand knot. The larger cord is caught up in the smaller one over the anterior aspect of the right ankle. White adhesive tape wraps about the ankles at least 5 times beneath the electric cord. Prominent indentation marks are present on the ankles and wrists in the area of the ligature marks.

GAG FROM FACE:

A facial gag is present consisting of 2 portions of cloth extending around the lower portion of the face with the anterior portions both being in the mouth. The under portion of cloth has the appearance of a blue bandana. The outer portion has the appearance of a nylon female under garment. Between the two portions in the region of the left side of the mouth, exists multiple portions of adhesive tape. The adhesive tape strips are approximately 1/2 inch in width and are covered with dried blood and run at roughly right angles to the facial ligatures. The strips of adhesive are up to an estimated 8 inches in length and 4 of these flap across the left cheek and extend between the ligatures with tails occurring down to and below the chin in the near midline or to the left of the midline.

CLOTHING

The subject is dressed in a terry cloth muu muu type lounging dress which is green to blue to white in color. It is pulled up above the level of her pubis. The dress is partly blood soaked. It has semi-short sleeves extending approximately to the antecubital areas.

The gag is deeply embedded in the mouth. The anterior upper teeth are present over the front of the gag. It is removed in continuity with the tape strips after labeling appropriately the edges where cut. The subject also wears a white brassiere which is partly blood soaked and is in place.

The skin gag mark about the lower cheeks bilaterally is flesh colored and is not blood covered as is the rest of the face down to the upper edge of the gag mark and below the gag mark a small amount of smeared dried blood is present. The line of the mark is pale and is roughly horizontal, extending about the upper neck, just below the level of the occiput. The 2 gags are tied on the left posteriorly with at least double knots on each.

AT 9:45 A.M. I HAVE GIVEN TO DETECTIVE DENNIS FORCINO, PLUMAS COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE, APPROPRIATELY LABELED LIGATURES FROM FACE,WRISTS, ANKLES, ALONG WITH THE PORTION OF PREVIOUSLY DESCRIBED ADHESIVE TAPE.

EXTERNAL BLOOD PATTERNS.

Considerable dried and some liquid blood is present over the entire fae in a sometimes smudged pattern. Blood appears to have extended downward from the right side of the mouth and nose towards the posterior head and neck.

The pattern stops abruptly on the face at the level of the gag mark on the under surface of the chin is a very small amount of patchy dried and somewhat smeared blood. Few dried droplets of blood occur about a stab wound in the near central neck. Few more droplets of dried blood occur over the skin of the anterior chest about 3 wounds to be described in the upper chest. Minimal smudged blood is also present here. A large wound beneath the left nipple shows minimal blood at its edge, a small apparent puncture wound just medial to the larger left breast wound shows virtually no blood at its edges. Blood is present on the anterior portions of both hands., and minimal blood is present on the dorsum of the right hand and more is present on the dorsum of the left hand. The anterior hand blood appears smeared, whereas the dorsum of the left hand shows some linear drops of blood especially over the little finger and the long finger. Scattered small dried blood droplets have extended down over the anterior right thigh and the area of the anterior iliac crest on the right. Smeared blood is present on the lower right thigh and the right leg laterally, and smeared blood is present on the under surfaces of both feet excluding the arches of the feet, suggesting that the individual stood or walked in blood. Some smeared blood is also present over the lateral surface of the leg and the thigh on the left side. Portions of the dried blood from the soles of the feet are gathered on moist cotton tipped applicators and are placed in appropriately labeled envelopes. There is virtually no blood on the posterior aspects of the body expect for a small amount of patchy, sheen-like dried blood over the left buttock.

HEAD INJURIES:

The head and face show numerous zones of blunt force trauma. The left scalp, at a distance of approximately an inch and half above the central portion of the left ear, shows stellate irregularly outlined zone of laceration, overall measuring 2-1/2 x 1 1/4 inches in greatest dimension. This extends down to skull bone. The left ear shows just above the ear lobe laterally, a deep laceration through the posterior pinna. It is 5/8 X 1/4 inch in greatest dimension, and is oblique. The ear itself is markedly bruised, and varies from bluish-red to purplish in color. A laceration involves the anterior upper portion of the ear. It extends from the adjacent skin of the scalp over the anterior ear in an overall area 3/4 x 1/8 inch in greatest dimension. A skip zone is present between the ear and the scalp portion of the wound. A 3/4 inch laceration is present in the mid occiput posteriorly. It occurs approximately 1 inch above ear level. It is triangular in shape.

The face in front of the ear shows a 3 inch, roughly ovoid zone of dull bluish-red discoloration. This area is modestly swollen.

The right side of the face shows as a a distance of 1-1/4 inches above the ear, a flat laceration down to skull bone measuring 5/8 inch in length. An irregular laceration occurs behind bruise of right ear. It measures 3/4 inch in length and extends down to the underlying mastoid process. The right upper eyelid shows 2 horizontal rough-edged lacerated wound, the upper one 1 x 1/8 inch in greatest dimension, the lower one 3/8 x 1/4 inch. Bluish-red bruising and some swelling involves both eyelids on the right. A curved 1/2 inch laceration with a round anterior abrasion mark is present on the right cheek. A 1/4 inch laceration is present just lateral to the mid portion of the upper lip on the right side, and a 5/8 inch laceration which is horizontal involves the right side of the upper lip. It is partly surrounded by reddish-blue discoloration and the upper lip and lower lip both show bluish-red bruising. The bridge of the nose on the right side shows a 5/8 x 1/4 inch laceration.

LOWER ABDOMINAL WOUND:

In the left lower quadrant of the abdomen near the midline is an oblique 1 1/4 x 1/8 inch cut. It is surrounded by a small amount of bluish discoloration of the deep skin.

ARM AND HAND LESIONS:

A dull reddish pressure abrasion which is oblique, occurs above the left antecubital space by approximately 2 inches. It is 1 1/4 inches in length, and up to 1/4 inch in width. The dorsum of the left forearm shows a zone of dull red-yellow pressure abrasion over its lower one-third. This area is 1 1/2 x 5/8 inch in greatest dimension, and is arranged roughly in a vertical location. Considerable reddish bruising involves the wrist area and the lower forearm area on the left as well as the dorsum of the hand. Such zones vary up to approximately 4 inches in greatest dimension.

The dorsum of the left hand shows distally, horizontal stuttered cuts arranged in roughly parallel fashion and commencing on the bases of the fourth and fifth fingers, and extending approximately to the mid palm level. These cuts are arranged in 2’s or 3’s and sometimes coalesce and occur from 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch apart. They are 3/8 to an inch in length.

The dorsum of the hand also shows dull red pressure abrasions near the wrist, and the wrist shows one similar zone dorsally. Three of these are present. They vary from 1/8 to 5/8 inches in greatest dimension. A prominent ligature mark is present about the upper left wrist. A superficial 3/8 inch cut is present over the middle knuckle of the dorsum of the index finger on the left side. The palm of the left hand is unremarkable.

The dorsum of the right hand shows considerable bruising over a 2 1/2 inch zone. This is reddish-blue in color. Centrally located in this bruise is an abrasion which is roughly horizontal and approximately 1/2 inch in length. Three other dorsal abrasions are present. Few are noted over the fingers along with few superficial cuts of the fingers, one on the index finger is vertical and approximately 1/4 inch in length. Oblique depressed ligature marks are present on the dorsum of the right wrist, and bruising occurs on the ventral surface of the wrist in 3 coalescing areas up to 1-1/2 inches in greatest dimension Also the ventral surface of the palm shows near the wrist, a 1/2 inch zone of dull red abrasion. A superficial cut occurs at the base of the index finger of the right hand. It is horizontal and 1/4 inch in length.

CHEST WOUNDS

Four stab wounds and a puncture type wound occur in the anterior chest. One stab wound occurs in the upper medial chest. It is 1/2 inch long, oblique, and 1 inch from the anterior midline. It is 3 1/2 inches above the nipple line. It extends only into subcutaneous tissue for approximately 1/2 inch. The second stab is 5/8 inch long, and it is 1/2 inch from the anterior midline on the right side. It is 3 inches above the nipple line. It extends inward through the second interspace, to enter the ascending aorta at a distance of approximately 1/2 inch above the pericardial reflection. The hole in the aorta is approximately 5/8 inch long. The estimated minimal depth of this track is approximately 2 1/2 inches. It also extends through the posterior aorta and nicks the anterior spine for 1/8 inch. The third stab wound is 1/4 inch from the anterior midline 1-3/4 inches above the nipple line and is 5/8 of an inch long. It, too is oblique and like other wounds, it shows a sharper lower edge than the upper edge. It extends down to the sternum and nicks the sternum and ends in this location. The depth of this track is an estimated 1/4 inch. A cutting stab wound occurs over the lower portion of the left breast. It is 2 inches long and gapes for 1/2 inch. It is 1 inch below the nipple and the medial edge is 2-1/2 inches from the anterior midline. This wound extends inward through a 1 -1/2 inch hole in the fifth interspace and extends into the left pleural cavity. It then extends through the edge of the lower lobe of the left lung after nicking the left 7th interspace posteriorly at a distance of 1 inch lateral to the spine. The hole in the posterior interspace is approximately 1 inch long and is oblique. The track fades out in the underlying soft tissue. The estimated minimal depth of this track is 5 1/2 inches. At a distance of 1 inch from the anteromedial end of the larger wound exists a 1/8 inch puncture wound. The puncture wound extends inward for approximately 1/4 inch, ending in the underlying fat.

All the stab wounds demonstrate a track of anterior to posterior with roughly no left to right deviation or up and down deviation. The only exception to this is the large cut in the left breast. This track appears to be extending from left towards right.

NECK WOUND:

Anteriorly on the neck is a 1/2 inch, nearly horizontal stab wound. It is in the near midline and 8 inches above the nipple line. It extends directly inward with virtually no up or down deviation. The wound is from front to back and extends slightly from left to right to enter the larynx just below the true cord on the left side. The hole. here is 1/2 inch long. It then extends totally through the larynx, through the posterior larynx, through the adjoining esophagus and the track ends in the anterior cervical spine approximately at the level of C3. A nick is present in the spine 1/8 inch long at the area where the track ends. Overall the estimated depth of the track is approximately 1 1/4 inches. Hemorrhage is present about the edges of the track throughout its course.

PRIMARY INCISION AND BODY CAVITIES:

The primary incision is Y-shaped. Tone of the skin is good. The subcutaneous fat is approximately 3/8 inch in the infra-umbilical region. Tone and development of musculature is good. The left pleural space contains approximately 1500 cc of liquid blood, the right pleural space approximately 300 cc. The pericardial sac contains approximately 20 cc of liquid blood. The abdominal cavity shows no excess fluid or adhesions.

HEAD AND BRAIN:

The deep scalp structures show marked hemorrhages around the various zones of blunt force injury previously described. The posterior parietal convexities on both sides are covered by a thin sheen of subdural blood, approximately 5cc on each side. Minimal subarachnoid hemorrhage is present on the upper surface of the frontal lobe, the under surface of the cerebellum, the lateral surface of the right temporal lobe, the under surface of the right temporal lobe. The vessels at the base are unremarkable. The uncal gyri show no notches. The cerebellum shows no pressure cone. The under surface of the right temporal lobe shows a single zone of contusion hemorrhage measuring 1/4 inch in greatest dimension. The ventricles contain no blood. Multiple slices of pons and medulla show no gross pathology, and the cerebellar slices are also unremarkable. The left orbital plate shows a fracture extending from the midline up over the frontal bone. This occurs under the large laceration of the left forehead previously described. Another fracture involves the orbital plate on the right side. It is horizontal and approximately 1/2 inch long. Another fracture occurs beneath the curved laceration of the upper right cheek The underlying zygomatic arch is fractured near its junction with the orbital rim in this location.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND EXTERNAL EXAMINATION:

This is the body of a fairly well developed and nourished white male appearing to be of approximately the same the stated age of 15. Rigor is complete and mild lividity is present dorsally and it no longer blanches. The body is cold to the touch.

The scalp is covered by fairly long, tan hair. The pupils are round and equal. The irides are blue. The sclerae are white. The nose contains liquid and clotted blood. The mouth contains a small amount of blood. Teeth are in good repair. The neck shows trauma to be described, as does the expanded chest. The abdomen is flat. The external genitals are unremarkable. The subject is circumcised. The anus shows no dilatation or injury. The hands show adhesive marks in area of ligature. The base of the long finger of the left hand shows dorsally a 3/4 inch zone of bruising, and the hands otherwise show no evidence of trauma.

LIGATURES:

Ligatures are present about the wrists and about the ankles. The ankle ligature consists of a white electric double cord showing a male end on one end. The opposite end has been cut. This is the end that extended to the wire on Dana Wingate (Information from Detective Forcino). This wire is looped about the upper ankles 2 time. The right ankle is anterior to the left one. The left ankle is rotated externally and the right ankle is in anatomical position. The tie of ligature is present laterally and anteriorly over the right ankle. The ligature appropriately labeled and tied and cut anteriorly. The ankle ligature is quite tight. It extends about the individual’s socks and in part encompasses the lower portion of the left posterior leg of the sweat pants the individual is wearing, as well as the right posterior leg of the sweat pants.

WRIST LIGATURE:

The wrist ligature is composed of multiple layers of adhesive tape about the wrists and proximal hands. The hands are tied in this fashion: anteriorly, nearly in a praying position although the fingers of the right hand cover the index finger and thumb on the left, many of the fingers of the left curve around the medial aspect of the right hand at the base of the right little finger.

John’s hands (Autopsy photo)

Considerable blood is spattered over the hands and over the tape of the hand ligature. This tape ligature is cut over the upper portion in the area between the joined hands. A portion of the tape encircles the right entire right wrist. Whereas the tape about the left wrist does not circle the ventral aspect of the left wrist. The encircling tape on the right wrist is cut on the superior margin. The skin beneath the tailed hands and wrists areas is free of blood, whereas the margins of the zones of ligature mark show blood extending as previously described onto the entire hand.

Caught up in the tape on the dorsal and on the ventral surface of the hands as well as within the palms of both hands are multiple hairs or hair like structures, generally light tan in color, sometimes somewhat brown in color, and in one instance one of the hair like structures is whitish in color.

Attached to the right anterior sleeve of the subject’s jacket are several more hairs. They are attached in portions of blood cloth in this location.

CLOTHING:

The subject wears a sleeveless light blue ski vest, which is fairly well saturated with blood anteriorly. Beneath this exists a darker blue sweat jacket with a zipper down the front. In the left anterior chest of this jacket exists an oblique hole measuring an estimated 1/2 inch in length it occurs approximately over the area of the left breast. The pants are sweat pants with a white stripe down the sides ( 5 white stripes). The remainder of the pants are blue and the pants are pulled up. Beneath these pants are a red athletic shorts stating “Gorton Physical ED.” beneath the shield in ink is the name “Shelia Sharp” Beneath these red P.E. pants is a pair of jockey shorts which are also pulled up. They are white in color and show a blue band about their top.

Beneath the sweat jacket exists a tank top net or mesh shirt showing a defect in the upper anterior near mid portion near the defect previously described in the garment exterior to this tank top shirt.

At 11:00 A.M. the following entities are given to Detective Forcino: The lower ligature, electric cord, the hand and wrist ligature, white adhesive tape, the hairs from the hands, the hairs from the anterior right external jacket sleeve and all the clothing just described. The hairs have been placed in appropriately labeled and sealed plastic envelopes.

BLOOD PATTERNS 4:15 P.M.

The anterior neck is covered by a thick dry sheen of blood and the face is covered by a thick sheen of blood and has dripped down over the posterior hair where some moist blood is still present. The hands are both covered by considerable blood on both surfaces except for the area of previously described ligature. Some sheen of blood is present on the arms and forearms in a thin, patchy fashion.

PRIMARY INCISION AND BODY CAVITIES:

G.I. TRACT: The esophagus is unremarkable. The stomach contains approximately 5 ounces of a thick somewhat syrupy reddish-brown liquid. The small and large bowels show no significant features. The appendix is present.

HEAD AND BRAIN: Beneath the wounds labeled 5 and 6 on the diagram on the left side of the individual’s head , exist 2 round depressed skull fractures. Each is 1/4 inch across, and they reconnected by an isthmus of fracture, which is also depressed and is approximately 1/4 inch wide. The depression of the superior fracture is 1/2 inch. Brain tissue is protruding from this superior fracture. Another nearly similar but ovoid depressed fracture occurs under laceration #1 on the diagram on the left frontal region. This 1 inch fracture is depressed for approximately 1/4 inch.

A thin sheen of subdural blood, approximately 50cc overall, is present over the left cerebral convexity. The dura has been torn away from the inner aspect of the skull. There is no epidural hemorrhage. There is rather marked bluish discoloration of both petrous ridges, A fracture line involves the base of the middle fossa on the right . They extend upward over the convexities, but do not extend to the midline.

The round fracture over the left frontal region shows multiple layers of bone extending into the superficial brain. These circle-like segments of bone on the inner-most aspect measure up to approximately 5/8 inch in width.

The mid superior parietal region shows a depressed stellate fracture 1/2 inch in great dimension. The brain weighs an estimated 1500 grams. Gyri are markedly flattened. Sulci narrow and shallow. The left side of the brain is covered by diffuse subarachnoid hemorrhage. The cerebellum is surfaced by minimal patchy subarachnoid hemorrhage. The vessels at the base are unremarkable. The uncal gyri both show notches, and the cerebellum shows pressure cone. Beneath the two rounded depressed fractures of the posterior left parietal region exist similar sized and shaped round defects in the brain, extending inwards for approximately 1/2 inch. Marked hemorrhage occurs at the edges of these defects and these lacerations extend down the underlying white matter of the posterolateral parietal lobe. Marked bruising involves the lateral frontal lobe on the left side in an area up to approximately 2-1/2 inches in greatest dimension. Bruising also involves the lateral parietal area, in its midportion, in a 1 inch zone on the left side. The undersurface of the brain shows no contusion zones. The ventricular system is collapsed and contains pink spinal fluid.

Focal zones of contusion hemorrhage involves the under surface of both sides of the cerebellum in areas up to 1/8 inch in greatest dimension.

This wound extends down to totally divide the underlying thyroid. cartilage, extends into the lumen of the larynx in a large defect measuring approximately 2 inches across. This defect contains blood and clot is oblique.

The skin just below the major slashing wound shows a 1/8 inch puncture defect extending just into the underlying tissue, and showing a 1 1/2 inch scratch-like tail which is somewhat irregular and oblique and extends from the near midline towards the right side.

The cutting stab actually extends completely through the larynx into the prespinal fascia, and extends between cervical spin 3 and 4 on the left side. The over all depth of this track is approximately 2 inches without pressure, hemorrhage is present in the prespinal fascia.

The stab would through the thyroid cartilage extends into the larynx at the level just above the vocal fold. The laryngeal cartilages are otherwise intact, the hyoid bone shows no fracture. The laryngeal lumen contains a moderate amount of blood.

A defect is present in the right carotid artery and jugular vein along the edge of the track through the larynx. The defect is approximately 1/4 inch in the vein and 1/8 inch in the artery. The left carotid show no defect.

EXAMINATION RECORD:

CASE NO: ADP-81-07

NAME: DANA PAUL WINGATE.

DATE: 4/13/81

HOUR: 950 A.M.

AGE: 17

RACE: WHITE

SEX: MALE

HEIGHT: 5’10”

WEIGHT: 140 LBS.

IDENTIFICATION BY DETECTIVE D. FORCINO, PLUMAS CO. SHERIFFS OFFICE.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND EXTERNAL EXAMINATION:

This is the body of a fairly well developed and nourished young white male of approximately the stated age. Rigor is complete and moderate in amount and breaks readily. The body is cold to the touch. Lividity is marked anteriorly and it no longer blanches and mild non blanching lividity is present posteriorly. The scalp is covered by brown, wavy, medium length hair. The pupils are round and equal. The irides are brownish-blue in color. The cornea are very minimally clouded. The nose contains dried blood. The mouth shows multiple fractured teeth over the upper right anterior alveolar ridge. The anterior incisor shows a loss of its lateral 1/8. The cuspid is loose in its socket and removes easily, and the bicuspid is on the table with the subject. The maxilla is markedly fractured through the upper alveolar ridge in the area of the broken teeth. The neck shows no external evidence of injury. The chest is expanded. The abdomen is virtually flat. The penis shows mottled brownish congenital discoloration of the shaft and there is no hemorrhage in the deep tissue under the zones of discoloration. The anus shows no dilatation.

The thighs, knees, legs, and feet are all unremarkable. The arms show no evidence of needle marks. The wrists bilaterally show ligature marks with some remaining vestiges of adhesive about their peripheries. The hands are free of injury. The right hand shows, on the thumb and forefinger, a white fiber-like material which is placed in an appropriately labeled plastic container.

The posterior aspects of the body are unremarkable except for 2 roughly rectangular zones of bruising over both buttocks. Each is approximately 2 inches in greatest dimension, and on section hemorrhage is present in the underlying fat. Also present on the posterior aspect of the left thigh in its mid upper portion exists another 2 inch zone of roughly rectangular bluish-red oozing, which also shows underlying hemorrhage on section.

LIGATURES:

Wrapped around the subject’s legs, lower one-third, is a single strand of white double electric cord which is tied posteriorly behind the medial aspect of the right lower leg.

This cord is only modestly tight. Next to the tie posteriorly is a female end of the cord showing two lateral plug in zones of one side covered by a plastic plate and a single pair of plug in areas on the opposite side. A rectangular-shaped defect if present on the end of the elongated rubber or plastic end. The opposite end of the wire has previously been cut and at this time extends up between the individual’s thighs to a distance of approximately 8 inches above the knees.

Detective Forcino states that this end of the cord was cut by mortician Andy Anderson and that in fact this cord led to the other male victim.

About the subject’s hiking boots on the left leg is a wrap of adhesive tape. This has the appearance of 3/4 or 1 inch white adhesive. It extends completely around the upper portion of the boot and is not connected to the right boot which in turn shows a portion of similar tape attached to its upper lateral anterior portion.

Dana Wingate’s legs (Autopsy photo)

One of the ends of this portion extends down over the heel. It is stuck to the posterior aspect of the heel. The other portion extends upward over the tongue to the anterior area of the underlying sock.

Attached about the right wrist is a mass of adhesive tape, most markedly attached dorsally and not attached at all ventrally where it extends in a loop about the proximal hand. Multiple portions of tape are conglomerated in this wrapping, and it is not tight. It is not attached to the left upper extremity at this time.

The tape on the right hiking boot is firmly attached to the under surface of the hell for a distance of approximately 2 inches.

The tape that is tightly applied to the upper portion of the left hiking boot is out on the anteromedial aspect prior to removal of the boot and the tape is left with the boot. The lower leg ligature of double white electric cord is cut anteriorly.

The multilayered adhesive right wrist strap is removed and appropriately labeled. The loop of this wrap is approximately 6 inches across, suggesting that in reality the wrap had been about the opposite wrist also.

The tape about the left boot is in 2 layers. One of the layers is firmly attached to the posterior of the subject’s pants.

CLOTHING:

The subject wears heavy brown above-the-ankle length hiking boots. They show waffle-type soles and are labeled “Virbum” on the soles. The subject wears sweat socks which show thick orange and thinner blue stripes about their tops. He also wears blue corduroy type Levi jeans and the top button of the jeans is unbuttoned and the zipper is down approximately 2 inches. The jeans show patch work about the right knee, and areas of ripping and holes are present on the right lower leg and in a zone of patching just below the right knee. He also wears a sweater with long sleeves and a crew type neck. It is generally red and dark blue colored over the neck, shoulder, and arm portion down to the level of the elbows, and this blue is separated from the red of the remainder of the sweater by multiple lines of light blue, green, yellow, orange, and red. The lines are approximately 3/8 of an inch apart. They in turn are separated by thin 1/8 inch blue lines occur over the anterior upper portion of the sweater extending down the anterior arms to the elbow and also occur posteriorly and laterally. The upper portions of the pants are partly blood soaked especially posteriorly, where blood is still moist.

The subject also wears an orange colored t-shirt, which is considerably blood soaked and shows anteriorly a large decoration in red, white, and blue stating “Ski, U.S.A.” and about this periphery of this decoration is a pine tree with snow, and above it is a sun. This covers nearly the entire central portion of the front of the shirt.

The subject also wears about his left wrist a chain type silver metal colored bracelet with a black identification entity on the dorsal surface. The cain is quite thick, up to 1/2 inch and there is no identifiable lettering on the black identification portion of the bracelet. The clasp on the bracelet states “Speidel”.

At 10:30 A.M. the clothing, the tape from the upper right hiking boot, the tape from about the right wrist, and the electric cord lower leg ligature are all given to Detective Dennis Forcino. With tags.

*it was later determined that Dana may have been interrupted by the suspect/s while he was using the bathroom and thus the reason for his jeans to be unbuttoned and partially zipped * (S.Marlowe)

BLOOD PATTERNS 2:45 P.M.:

The subject shows a marked amount of dried blood over the left side of his face and forehead and a lesser amount over the right side and right lateral and upper neck. Some dried, smeared blood is present on the dorsum of the right hand, and it does not involve the area of tape ligature. The right hand also shows dried blood on its surface dorsally, and the blood does not involve the area of tape ligature which in itself shows white adhesive around its periphery on both wrists.

HEAD TRAUMA:

The face and scalp show marked trauma. The left side of the head shows extending from just above the ear and anterior to posterior a dull red rectangle 4 1/4 X 1 inch in greatest dimension. This mark anteriorly shows a 1/2 circle mark which is 3/4 inch across. The underlying scalp tissue show marked hemorrhage and a deep fracture line, irregular at its edges., follows roughly the elongated rectangle. It measures approximately 5 inches in length, and portions of bone have been loosened from this fracture and dangle from the scalp tissue after reflecting the scalp. Extending upward from the anterior portion of this rectangle is another rectangle, this one 2 1/2 X 3/4 inch in greatest dimension. Its superior edge is a 5/8 inch semicircle of laceration in the anterior parietal region. A fracture line extends up to this semicircle zone from the major previously described fracture.

The left ear is nearly separated in its mid portion with a 1-1/2 X 2 inch laceration which is roughly stellate in configuration. Just anterior to the left ear is a semicircular abraded mark measuring 3/4 inch across Inferior to this is a 1/4 inch abrasion. The near entire left upper cheek shows bruising and swelling. The left posterior parietal area shows 2 zones of laceration over the convexity. The anterior one is roughly hockey stick shaped and it is 1 1/2 inches long. The posterior one is linear and runs anterior to posterior for 1 1/4 inches. The left ear also shows marked reddish bruising.

The face shows numerous tiny petechiae, and the conjunctivae both show focal hemorrhages and scattered tiny dot like petechiae. The upper lip on the left side shows 3 lacerations. They go through to the mucosa. They vary from 1/2 to 3/8 inch in greatest dimension. Bruising involves the mid portion of the upper lip. The left eyelid, upper, shows marked bruising and swelling. The face is generally puffy.

Posterior to the right ear exists a curved, semicircular 3/4 inch laceration and anterior to it is an abraded ovoid 3/L, inch zone. Above this wound complex is another laceration. It shows peripheral abrasion up to 3/8 inch in thickness on its right side.

Marked hemorrhage is present about all these zones of laceration, abrasion and bruising on the deep scalp surface. There is no epidural hemorrhage. Only a small amount of subdural hemorrhage is present, approximately 5cc over both convexities.

The marked zone of fracturing over the left parietal temporal region extends deeply down into the petrous portion of the temporal bone on the left side as well as through the left orbital plate and sphenoid wing.

Further fractures extend across the midline to the right petrous ridge forming a hinge type fracture.

The brain weighs an estimated 1400 grams. Gyri are mildly flattened and sulci arrowed. The uncal gyri both show small notches. The cerebellum shows minimal cone. Subarachnoid hemorrhage is present over the undersurface of the left frontal lobe and its lateral surface and is also present over the right posterior temporal lobe laterally. A small amount of subarachnoid hemorrhage is present patchily within the cerebellum. The vessels at the base are unremarkable.

Multiple slices of cerebrum show marked bruising and laceration of the left lateral parietal temporal region over an area 3 inches in greatest dimension. This extends for a maximum depth of 1 inch into the parenchyma. It extends from the frontal onto the temporal lobe on the left. Occasional tiny petechiae are present on the upper pons on section. The ventricular system, the lateral ventricles, show approximation of their edges and pink spinal fluid is present in the ventricles. The right lateral occipital parietal area over a 1 inch zone shows marked contusion. This occurs roughly under the 2 posterolateral lacerations described on the right side of the scalp.

NECK ORGANS:

The skin of the neck shows no areas of bruising or abrasion at this time. The deep soft tissues, however, in the midline of the neck, show a large sized area of hemorrhage in the musculature over the thyroid cartilage, predominantly on the left side but partially on the right.

It is up to 3/4 inch in length, and extends down to the cartilaginous structures. Further zones of hemorrhage occur in the soft tissues about the end of the thyroid cartilage, the greater cornua on the right side. Two such zones of hemorrhage up to 1/4 inch in greatest dimension are present in this region. The laryngeal lumen contains a small amount of liquid blood, as does the tracheal lumen. The tongue shows no evident bite marks. The laryngeal cartilages appear free of fractures as does the hyoid bone.

FBI REPORT ON VICTIMS BACKGROUNDS

MAY 13, 1981

TO: DIRECTOR, FBI

FROM: SAC, SACRAMENTO

SUBJECT: UNSUB, TINA SHARP-VICTIM, POSSIBLE KIDNAPPING.

Enclosed for the BSU at Quantico is a complete set of black and white photos depicting the crime scene where the triple murder in this case took place, which photographs were taken by the PCSO, Quincy, CA. Enclosed for the BSU at Quantico are copies of three pathology reports regarding homicide victims Glenna Susan Sharp, John Sharp, and Dana Wingate. Aerial photographs of the crime scene and a photo of Tina Sharp are enclosed. The following information is provided in an effort to provide a basis for a psychological profile on the person or persons possibly responsible for the murders and the disappearance of Tina Sharp.

Glenna Susan Sharp, possibly maiden name, Davis, a WFA , age 36 was in the process of obtaining a divorce from her husband, who is in the US Navy, currently assigned to the Seabees at Groton, Connecticut. Sharp lived with her husband for several years as a military wife and it is believed that all the children who were residing with her at Keddie, CA at the time of her death were a product of their marriage. Sharp came to Quincy, CA in the spring of 1980 and initially lived in a very small travel trailer in a trailer park in Quincy . In approximately November 1980, she moved to a small rental house in Keddie, CA, approximately 10 miles from Quincy, where she lived at the time of her death. She has a brother living in the Quincy area, who was probably the inducement for the move to the area. Sharp was described as being approximately 5′ 2″ tall and weighing 100 pounds. Her husband was also of small physical stature. She was described as a woman who wore glasses and had short hair. She was not a fancy dresser and was best described by causal associates and neighbors as a loner. She was known to have dated at least two men in the last year, both of whom were employed. Neither of these two individuals was known to be very successful in their livelihoods. One of these men who she dated was known to be approximately ten years older than her, the other one the same age.

Sharp had one close girlfriend, a neighbor woman with the name of Meeks.. Sharp’s only known source of income came from her position as a CETA worker, wherein she was paid to attend school, the Feather River Community College, where she was to learn a business trade, she was described as being a good student who studied hard and obtained good grades, but was also a loner and who did not participate in social gatherings such as coffee breaks. She had no other source of income other than a $250 a month allotment check from the US Navy via her husband. Prior to her death Sharp had no local criminal record nor was she known to local authorities. Sharp was not a known drug user nor was she known to drink alcohol to a great extent. No drugs or alcohol were found in the house at the time of her death. She was not known to frequent bars in the area. It was noted that her house was sparsely furnished and what furnishings were present were of little to no value.

Assistant Sheriff Ken Shanks, PCSO, noted that Sharp’s brother, who made the identification of the bodies at the murder scene almost came to tears at the time, but was able to restrain himself. The sister-in-law maintained composure throughout the episode. The possibility exists, however that greater emotional outbursts occurred at other times when outsiders were not present.

The second homicide victim, John Sharp, son of victim Glenna Susan Sharp, described as a white male, age 15 years, weight 105 pounds, height 5’2 1/2 ” , also died of multiple stab wounds and a severe beating of the head. John was a student at Quincy High School with no prior arrest record in Plumas County. He was described as having a few close friends with Dana Wingate, third victim in this homicide, as his closet friend. He also associated with the Meeks children, a neighbor family. Richard Meeks was his primary associate in his family. John is known to have smoked marijuana in the past although the exact frequency is unclear. There is also a possibility that John was involved in selling marijuana as well, although this is unsubstantiated. He was never picked up by authorities for this. John is known to have stolen marijuana from the residence of an older associate in Quincy on two occasions, he was caught for this by the older associate, approximately age 30, but was not charged with the crime. An informal agreement was worked out between Sharp and the victim whereby Sharp cut firewood for the man to pay off his debt. Another juvenile was involved with Sharp in this activity. Sharp is not known to have been involved with hard drugs in the past. He is a suspected beer drinker, the suspicion stemming from his associates in the Quincy area and his general reputation in school. Shard did not own a car nor is he known to drive a motor vehicle. He did not have a job and has no known source of income. His primary source of transportation is hitchhiking around the Quincy/Keddie area. Sharp had no known enemies at the time of his death.

Associates describe Sharp as an aggressive individual, who was prone to fighting. It was pointed out that he had a black eye from fighting approximately one week before he was killed. Sharp was known to spend weekends away from his residence, supposedly staying at the homes of friends in the Quincy area. Sharp was last seen hitchhiking from Quincy, CA to Keddie at approximately 10:06 pm the night before his body was discovered.

The third homicide victim, Dana Wingate is described as a white male age 17, height 5′ 10” weight 140 pounds. Wingate died of multiple skull wounds primarily stemming from a severe beating with a blunt instrument. Wingate is not known to have been stabbed as were the other victims in this matter. Wingate was a friend of the victim John Sharp. He lived in a foster home in the Quincy area, having been placed there by the Plumas County Probation Department on October 11, 1979. Prior to that he lived with his father who still resides in the Quincy area. His mother is a drug user residing 100 miles from Quincy. His father is described by authorities as being the “town drunk” who supports himself doing odd jobs in the Quincy area. Wingate is suspected of being a marijuana user although this is not verified. He is a known diabetic, who requires regular insulin shots. He received his last injection between 6:30 and 7:30 pm the evening he was murdered. Wingate is suspected of not being heavy drinker or user of drugs in view of his reliance on insulin. Both reportedly react adversely with insulin. Wingate attended high school with John Sharp. Wingate had three sisters, ages 11, 14, and 16, who lived with their mother until her arrest several months ago. At that time they came to live with their father. Wingate’s closest known friends were John Sharp and another resident of the foster home. Wingate was placed on probation following his being charged with the torture of a cat in the Quincy area. He and another friend injected the cat with a quantity of insulin and the friend then burned the cat alive, Wingate was described by his foster mother as an individual who was afraid to accept responsibility for himself. Wingate would probably not defend himself if provoked, although, he had no known enemies.

Wingate was recently becoming a “ladies man” with the girls at school. He was also rumored to be having sexual intercourse with a 27 year old unmarried woman in the Quincy area. He was known to have a more adult sense of humor than most friends his age.

Possible kidnapping victim in this matter. Tina Sharp, is physically described as follows:

Race: White

Sex: Female

Date of Birth July 22, 1968

Height 4’10”-4′ 11”

Weight: Approximately 90 pounds.

Hair: Dark Blonde

Eye: Blue

Build: Slight

Tina looked physically younger than her actual age. She was described by neighbors as being a sweet, innocent 12 year old girl, though she was known to be jealous of her older sister, Shelia’s physical appearance. Tina was previously known to Plumas County Sheriff’s Office having been listed as the possible victim in an incident involving a 50 year old man and another girl, in another area of California. The man was arrested and charged, but the charges were later dropped for lack of a credible witness. Subsequent investigation by authorities determined that Tina and the other girl may have had previous contact with this man. The exact details of the alleged previous incident are unclear based on available records.

Tina is known to have “forts” and hideouts in the hills near her home where she often went to play alone, sometimes taking friends with her. These forts appear to be nothing more than normal play areas for children her age and have been investigated by local authorities with nothing unusual located. Tina had several friends, the closet being Paula Seabolt and other Seabolt family children. The Seabolts are a neighbor family living in the Keddie area. It is noted that Mrs. Seabolt would allow her children to play with Tina at the Seabolt residence but would not allow her children to go to the Sharp residence. Additionally, the following general information is provided in response to questions set forth in the Bureau airtel. The electrical cord used to tie up the victims was cut from appliances in the Sharp’s residence where they were murdered. The electrical tape used on the victims is not known by surviving children to have been in the house prior to the murders and may have been brought by murderers but this is unsubstantiated. The knot used to tie the gag on Glenna Sue Sharp was tied in a “granny” knot. All other knots used to bind the victim were double half hitches with the second loop tied backward. The surviving Sharp children stated they never threw knives at the wall of the residence, nor did the deceased members of the Sharp family. Shelia Sharp, age 14 said the marks on the wall were not there before the murders. There were no signs of forced entry at the crime scene although the Sharp house was usually left unlocked whether family members were home or not.

Regarding Tina ever acting in an aggressive manner, there are rumors to that effect from neighbors and associates in the Keddie/Quincy area, although none of the rumors have checked out to be true by local authorities. At this point all rumors regarding her aggressiveness bear out to be false. Similarly, there is no information to indicate that Tina ever discussed the Carol Ann Fugate-Charles Starkweather murders with any of her friends or associates. Regarding the .22 caliber pellet found at the crime scene, this was determined to be a true pellet fired from a pellet gun. The pellet is round in shape and does not appear to be obviously misshapened from striking an object. Although the possibility exists that it maybe slightly out of round indicating it maybe have struck a soft object which did not leave a hard impression the pellet. The pellet has actually been determined to be a .177 caliber pellet. The three juveniles previously mentioned in Sacramento’s airtel to the Bureau as being present in another room in the house at the time of the murders are actually the same as the three minor children previously referred to. These are the only other individuals present at the time of the murders. The three juveniles ages 5,9, and 10, were unharmed. Two of them were children of Mrs. Sharp. The third being a neighbor child.

TINA SHARP VICTIM
POSSIBLE KIDNAPPING
OO: SACRAMENTO
The following psychological profile was prepared by SA John E. Douglas of the F.B.I’s Behavioral Science Unit. This profile is based upon the personal research conducted by SA Douglas and other members of the Behavioral Science Unit. It should be noted that this profile is based upon certain “probabilities” and suspects developed by your department may fit this profile in part or whole.

Victimology

Noting the personal background of each of these victims, they all could be categorized as a “high risk” to be recipient of a violent crime. Victim Dana Wingate, however appears to fit a prior pattern of behavior that could definitely lead him down a self-destructive path. His previous antisocial acts, which stem from a poor family upbringing were such that his only associates would in all probability to be very much like himself. He is diabetic and is known to have tortured animals. In all probability, Wingate had a poor-self image and was involved in criminal offenses that may have not been known by police agencies. Wingate in all probability, involved himself in criminal offenses to include burglary.

Crime Scene

The crime scene reflects that the offender responsible for these murders exhibited great control if he, in fact acted alone. The crime scene reflects that he did not precisely plan on killing all the victims. with exception of a .177 caliber pellet recovered at the crime scene, all of the “weapons” appear to have come from the residence of the victims (i.e. steak knife, hammer, etc). This indicates that killing the victims was in all probability an afterthought in order for the subject to gain and maintain control of the victims, he would have had to have some assistance. It appears that victim Dana Wingate was not killed in the same fashion as the other two victims (beaten but not stabbed) and was made comfortable by receiving a cushion from the couch to rest his head on prior to his own execution. Wingate may have been utilized to assist in the binding of the victims. Statements made by associates support the fact that he would probably succumb if threatened rather than strike back at an assailant. Blood is observed on the feet of Glenna Sharp to indicate she was alive when she walked in a pool of blood. This profiler does not know at this writing whose blood was on the feet of Glenna Sharp, noting this information could modify this profile.

According to investigative reports, Glenna Sharp was covered with a blanket after she was killed. This blanket came from her bed. This one act on the part of the offender(s) is probably the key as to who is responsible for the murders in part or whole.

Summary

The triple homicide appears to be without any motive. Neither sex nor money was the motivating factor. The crime scene reflects anger and rage. On one hand and remorse and guilt on the other. It appears at this point that there is more than one murderer involved in this triple homicide.

Offender Profile

The offender responsible for this triple homicide did not initially plan on killing. It was an afterthought as evidenced by the weapons he selected. All weapons could be referred to as weapons of opportunity This offender knew his victims, particularly John and Glenna Sharp.

This offender was motivated by his commitment and love for Tina Sharp. He loves her like a father. In all probability, Tina Sharp was planning on running away with him. She had nothing left at home and it was obvious , according to witnesses, that her mother no longer had control of her family.

It was Tina Sharp who probably went to her mother’s bedroom after she was killed got a blanket from her bed, and covered her mother with same. Tina Sharp, at 12 years of age may have had conflicts with her mother like many pre-adolescent girls at that age. However, since the homicide, she has probably demonstrated a great deal of remorse and guilt. Her feelings will be in direct conflict with her abductor and may lead to her own death if her abductor feels that she may go to the police.

If Tina Sharp is still alive, she will find that she will become increasingly depressed on significant anniversary and holiday dates (ie. mother’s birthday, her own birthday, Thanksgiving and Christmas) Her depression will cause her to seek out her father as well as the gravesite of her mother and brother. It should be noted here that information received by the Behavioral Science Unit is that father has an alibi at the time of the homicides and therefore is not suspect. Tina Sharp may have already located her mother’s place of burial and may have visited the burial site.

The offender demonstrated control and confidence and therefore he is not a juvenile nor is he free of any prior police record. He is fixated on young females and has been involved with them in the past be it for sex or for personal profit (i.e. child pornography)

Investigative Techniques

Your investigation should direct itself in saturating Sacramento and the San Francisco areas with local media accounts of this crime in hopes that Tina Sharp, if still alive, will see one of these articles. The articles should reflect sorrow for the victims particularly, Tina’s mother, who was recently divorced and struggling to raise her children.

These articles must be timely They should appear at times(dates) which are significant. The articles should set fourth data relative to the burial location of her mother and the exact location and address of her father. The victim will in all probability be drawn to the cemetery and/or attempt to get in contact with her father.

As stated earlier. Tina Sharp’s age works to the advantage of the investigator if tactics are utilized (media) to remind her of this crime and her surviving family members. However, her age will also work against her if her abductor feels he no longer has control over her and feels that she may go on the run and go to authorities.

If you have any questions relative to this profile, suspects developed, and/or interrogation techniques that may be found to be effective. You may telephonically contact SA Douglas at the FBI Academy telephone number (703) (number redacted by S.Marlowe)

CASE 81-0104-01

DATE: August 23, 1984

SUBJECTS: Glenna, John & Tina Sharp, and Dana Wingate.

A lengthy investigation was conducted and the case was closed in August 1983.

On April 21,1984, a subject named Ronald Pedrini found the upper portion of a skull at a location known as Camp 18 located northeast of Feather Falls, Butte County, Pedrini reported this to the Butte County Sheriff’s Office. The skull was sent to J. Paul Pane DOJ Pane said that if the lower mandible of the skull could be found that possibly the skull could be identified as that of Tina Sharp by a forensic odontologist. A search of the area where the skull was found was conducted on May 6, 7, and 8 1984. Twenty-six pieces of human bones including lower mandible were found. Subsequently, the skull was positively identified as that of Tina Sharp by comparison with dental x-rays.

On May 30, 1984 at 1845 hours an anonymous male caller telephoned the BSCO and said the skull was from the missing twelve year old girl from Keddie, Plumas County murders which occurred about two years ago.

LT. Butler advised that as soon as the pathologist examines the bones he was going to close the case. Attempts were made by Agent Crim and SGT Wright to notify relatives of Tina Sharp that her remains have been found.

Holbert, Jacqueline, maternal aunt of Tina Sharp was contacted on 6/20/84 and advised Tina Sharp’s remains had been located. Mrs Holbert said she would notify the sister and two brothers of Tina. Holbert did not know the whereabouts of James Sharp, Tina’s father, though she did say he was no longer in the Navy. Several attempts to contact James Sharp proved negative.

THEORIES IN THE KEDDIE MURDERS:

Four decades later, the truth behind cabin 28 remains tangled in speculation and mystery. Investigators, profilers, and armchair detectives have wrestled with the same questions for years. Why did this happen? And who committed the murders in Cabin 28?

  1. A DRUG DEAL GONE WRONG? Keddie had a reputation for small-scale drug activity. Some theorists argue that the murders were tied to narcotics, perhaps a transaction gone wrong, sealed the fate of those in Cabin 28.
  2. TINA- TARGET OR PAWN? Tina Sharp vanished from the crime scene and wasn’t discovered until 1984, when her skull surfaced miles away from Keddie. Was she the intended target? Lured away by someone she trusted? Others say she witnessed the killings and was taken to silence her.
  3. The Obsession Theory: Could it be the man from the trailer park, who came to cabin 28 wanting to talk to Sue about Tina, or was Tina about to runaway with him and Sue caught them, and an argument happened and things got out of hand?
  4. Martin Smartt and John “Bo” Boubede: Could these two have been the killers? Could Martin and Sue have been having an affair and Sue wanted to break it off? Or did Martin kill Sue for trying to talk to Marilyn into leaving Martin over alleged abuse. A lot of theories say he confessed in a letter to her, only quoting part of the letter “I’ve paid the price for your love and bought it with four lives, what more do you want ?” Sounds like a confession doesn’t it….however here is the full letter.

Was he a heartbroken father who was regretting turning his back on his children? He and John left town not long after the murders. Did Marilyn kill Sue along with someone else because she was jealous over the attention Martin was paying to Sue? Rumors went around that Martin had a thing for Sue.

5. Did Justin Smartt actually know who did it? Most likely. He told investigators things that only someone who saw it happen would know, and he said it was Martin and John Boubede, he also described to investigators what the suspects looked like. However Justin has since recanted his statement to police and said he only had had a dream.

7. Some say it was Shelia Sharp, saying she resented her mother and sought revenge. Yet these theories rest on gossip and not evidence. Law enforcement has never considered Shelia a suspect.

Cabin 28 is gone now demolished in 2004. But the ghost of what happened that night on April 12, 1981 still lingers. Locals whisper about footsteps on empty gravel, screams piercing the night, a woman’s voice calling for Tina. They claim the ground still holds the memory.

Where Cabin 28 once stood.

Whether or not you believe in ghosts, one truth endures: Forty-four years later those murdered in Cabin 28 are still waiting for someone to speak for them and the truth to be revealed. Until that day, the California pines will keep that secret to themselves.
